Liana Brent

Liana Brent is a scholar of Roman archaeology, who specializes in the material and social histories of the non-elite in the Roman world. Her research interests include Roman burial practices, Latin inscriptions, Greek and Roman sculpture, museum practices, and the history of collecting antiquities. She has experience excavating in Italy since 2009 at Pompeii, Orvieto, and the Vagnari Cemetery in southeast Italy.

She spent two years living in Rome as a Fellow at the American Academy in Rome, and after completing her Ph.D. in Classical Archaeology at Cornell University, she was a Fellow in the Wolf Humanities Center at the University of Pennsylvania. Liana has given talks on her research for various local chapters of the Archaeological Institute of America, and in 2021 she was the William J. Battle Lecturer in the Department of Classics at the University of Texas at Austin. She is currently Assistant Professor of Classical and Medieval Studies at Bates College, and when she’s not in Italy, she enjoys lake life at her house in Maine.
